ISLAMABAD - The death toll from a wave of unrest sparked by the assassination of Pakistan opposition leader Benazir Bhutto has risen to 58, an official said on Monday.
Rioting spread through dozens of cities and towns across the nuclear-armed nation after Bhutto was killed by a gun and suicide attack at an election campaign rally on Thursday. ‘The death toll in the violence is 58. Another 89 people were injured besides extensive damage to public and private property by rioters,’ an interior ministry official told AFP. The ministry’s previous death toll was 38. It said at the weekend that the turmoil had caused tens of millions of dollars in damage, leaving hundreds of shops, banks and businesses, as well as dozens of trains and railway stations, in flames. Life began to return to normal in most cities on Monday after a three-day period of mourning for Bhutto, but troops were still deployed in much of southern Sindh province, her political powerbase.
